Workshop: Presenting data to public audiences

Thursday, April 11 | 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Eads 217

The public is becoming increasingly data-savvy thanks to the rise of Big Data and machine learning. What does this mean for your research and public scholarship? This workshop will help you understand how to effectively communicate your data analysis and findings with a wide range of public audiences. We’ll draw on best practices in data journalism and visualization to help you make the most of your data story.

Presenters: Sarah Hutchins, Arts & Sciences’ assistant director of editorial and executive content, will share lessons and techniques from two decades in journalism and 10 years as a data journalism instructor for newsrooms and universities across the country. Maggie Fiock, director of Arts & Sciences data analysis, will share techniques for effective communication via charts, graphs, and story layout. Maggie has been in the data viz biz for over a decade and also draws on her background as a Spanish middle school teacher to conceptualize “translations” of all types.
