In this talk, I will demonstrate the practical application and the cognitive perception of data visualization in communication through: (1) interactive systems I have built that explore the role of data visualizations in clinical communication and (2) rhetoric devices that are used to guide people's understanding of data visualizations. I will present the issues around trust and bias in data visualizations for communication and how they could impact healthcare communication and interpretation of information.

Speaker Information

Hidy Kong is an assistant professor in Computer Science at Seattle University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and holds bachelor's degrees in Computer science and Music from Calvin College.  Hidy’s research examines cognitive theories and practical application of visualization for communication, especially in the healthcare domain. Her latest research projects looked at credibility and trust in visualization online, and how visualization can help clinicians and parents of young children communicate more efficiently. The results of her work have been published at top-tier venues for Human-Computer Interaction, including CHI and CSCW, and at medical conferences.
