Systemic Racism and Mental Health

Thursday, August 6 | 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Virtual Event

The U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on mental health problems among underrepresented minorities, published in 2002, suggested a significant contribution from systemic racism. Since that time, scholars have uncovered links between the two phenomena. This webinar uses an interview format to explore recent evidence of the link between systemic racism and mental health. This event is presented by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare, the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis and the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.

I thought that it was a valuable course. I had expected more focus to be on the mental health consequences of racism and how mental health treatment reflects systemic racism, even on the Wash U campus. Again, what was discussed was valuable but it may not have been a topic that could fit into an hour format.
