Special Perspectives: Anti-LGBTQIA+ Legislation, Rhetoric, and Violence

Wednesday, December 7, 2022 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Virtual Event

On November 19th, the attack on the ClubQ in Colorado Springs has left people in fear and trying to make sense of a seemingly senseless act of violence. But this violence against our LGBTQ+ loved ones wasn’t random. It was the horrible yet inevitable outcome of a climate openly and aggressively hostile toward LGBTQ+ people. When sources we trust—from faith leaders to lawmakers, school boards to news sites—knowingly spread misinformation and allow hate to flourish, this is the result. These virtual sessions aim to provide a space where we, as members of the Washington University School of Medicine community, can come together to acknowledge the pain of this tragedy. We will acknowledge the pervasive harm and devastation that is created by divisive narratives and stochastic terrorism, particularly focusing on heterosexism (or homophobia) and cissexism (or transphobia). We will hold space for reflections, emotions and calls to action. Please come and encourage your team and colleagues to join so that we can move through this together. Sessions will be hosted virtually on the following days/times:

  • Monday, 12/5: 11:00am – 12pm
  • Wednesday, 12/7: 12:00pm – 1pm
