On Being A Leader: Insights on Business, Government, Military and Academic Leadership

This gets to the heart of the question: What makes a great leader? For insights on the subject, we’re bringing together two acclaimed leaders to reflect on what constitutes greatness, their leadership philosophies and the importance of considering both data and values in decision-making. WashU Olin’s Dean Mark P. Taylor and The Brookings Institution’s General John R. Allen will share stories and observations from their long and distinguished careers in a conversation that, between the two, will cover leadership in business, academia, government and the military.

Immediately following the discussion, join us for a brief session on values-based leadership with professional certified coach Lara Heberlein.

General John R. Allen
President, The Brookings Institution
John Rutherford Allen assumed the presidency of the Brookings Institution in November 2017, having most recently served as chair of security and strategy and a distinguished fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at Brookings. Allen is a retired US Marine Corps four-star general and former commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and US Forces in Afghanistan. He is the coauthor of the book Turning Point: Policymaking in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (Brookings Press, 2020).

Dean Mark P. Taylor
Dean and Donald Danforth Jr. Distinguished Professor of Finance, Olin Business School
Mark Taylor is a leading authority on international finance. Before becoming dean of Washington University’s Olin Business School in 2016, Taylor had been a managing director at Black Rock, held faculty positions at London’s Cass Business School, Oxford University and New York University, and served as the dean of Warwick Business School. He is the co-author of two of the leading European textbooks in economics and microeconomics, and he served as an advisor at the Bank of England and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC.
