Speaker Information

Nhial Tutlam is an Assistant Professor at the Brown School. His research centers on the intersection of mental health impact of war trauma and risk of health outcomes such as suicide, substance use and HIV among youth affected by conflict, with the aim of developing and testing culturally congruent community-based interventions to address the myriad of mental health challenges in this vulnerable population both in refugee settlements and resettlement settings. Tutlam is currently leading an NIH-funded study in refugee settlements in Uganda to understand factors around adherence to HIV treatment, trauma-associated mental disorders. He is also leading a study funded through Brown School’s COVID-19 and Health Disparities Research Pilot Funds to understand the differential mental health impact of COVID-19 among refugee youth living in refugee settlements and urban centers in northern Uganda. Additionally, as part of his K01 research project, Tutlam will test an adapted combination intervention to address the impact of intergenerational trauma related mental health outcomes among youth from refugee families resettled in the United States.
