Kelly McGowan, MPH alumna '15 and Founder & Director of Transform314 will present her talk: It Starts at Home: Transforming the Health of the St. Louis Region Through Local Government at noon on November 12, 2024 in Brown Lounge.

As public health champions, it is vital that we leverage all tools to address the social determinants of health. One tool that is often overlooked is policy at the local level. Generally, Americans are least engaged with their municipal or local government although that is the level that impacts our daily lives the most. Kelly McGowan, Founder and Executive Director of Transform 314, will discuss the importance of local level policies in addressing communities' built environments. These inequities adversely impact health outcomes for those residing in historically disinvested communities in our region. She will also speak to what equity really means in this work, stories from the field highlighting these truths, and calls to action for attendees to activate change in our region.

The Public Health Speaker Series is presented by the Public Health Program every semester. The presentations offer our community members an opportunity to engage with Public Health Practitioners in every area on a more personal level. Students taking Public Health Seminar are required to attend, and the lectures are free and open to the public.

This talk will stream live via zoom and will be shared on the Brown School's YouTube page after the talk.
