Why are young people in Sub-Saharan Africa continuing to become infected with HIV? What is the hope for future prevention efforts? The SSTAR Project explores the influence of social structural factors, adolescent social transitions, and HIV prevention policies and programs on HIV acquisition among youth in Rakai, Uganda. John Santelli, professor of population and family health and pediatrics at Columbia University, discusses how combination prevention in Rakai suggests important linkages between social forces and biomedical interventions.
