Jazz at Holmes: 'In the Midst' Paul DeMarinis

DeMarinis is a well known performer, educator, and clinician and has been active in the St. Louis jazz scene for thirty-five years. He was cofounder of the chamber jazz trio In the Midst with William Lenihan and Roger Guth, one of St. Louis’ first new music improvising ensembles, performing widely in the early 1980’s.

All attendees are required to complete the health screener within 4 hours of their arrival to campus and be prepared to show the "Cleared for Campus" result to the event staff upon entry. All attendees must wear a mask at all times while indoors.

Speaker Information

Paul DeMarinis is a well known performer, educator, and clinician and has been active in the St. Louis jazz scene for thirty-five years. He was cofounder of the chamber jazz trio In the Midst with William Lenihan and Roger Guth, one of St. Louis’ first new music improvising ensembles, performing widely in the early 1980’s. 

Later, his cooperative Brilliant Corners recorded for the MAX JAZZ label in 1997. He has written extensively for his own trio, quartet, and sextet. He enjoys long term musical relationships with the Kim Portnoy Jazz Orchestra and the St. Louis Jazz Orchestra. He has also been a faculty member of the International Summer Jazz Academy in Poland.

DeMarinis has performed with many jazz notables including Count Basie Orchestra, Dave Liebman, Louie Bellson, Gary Foster, and Bobby Shew. In a supportive role he has been a member of ensembles accompanying a wide range of popular artists including Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr. and others.
