Hannah Mark, Fossett Postdoctoral Fellow, will present this talk.
This talk will be in two parts, loosely linked by the broad theme of active-source seismology in subduction zones. First, I'll describe how we collect marine active-source data, using as an example a research cruise I went on last fall in the Aleutian subduction zone. After some field stories and photos of whales far in the distance, we'll move to the Marianas trench for the second part of the talk. I'll show some of results from a project I've been working on using active-source data to measure seismic anisotropy in the incoming plate at the Marianas, and discuss the interpretation of this measurement in terms of plate bending faults and upper mantle hydration.
