The Science of Biodiversity and the Living Earth Collaborative

Abstract: The living world is diverse in many different ways, and scientists employ a comparable diversity in research methods to study biodiversity. Research on Anolis lizards exemplifies this diversity, including studies of biomechanics, genomics, behavior and real-time evolution. The Living Earth Collaborative—a biodiversity partnership between Washington University, the Saint Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Garden—has been established to synergize the efforts of these three world-leading institutions.

Jonathan Losos is an evolutionary biologist known for his research on how lizards rapidly evolve to adapt to changing environments. He graduated from Harvard University in 1984 and received his PhD from the University of California in 1989. After a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California Davis, Jonathan moved to Washington University for his first faculty position, before leaving in 2006 to become a professor of biology at Harvard and Curator in Herpetology at the university’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. He then returned to Washington University in 2018 to become the founding Director of the Living Earth Collaborative. Losos has written more than 250 scientific papers and two books, most recently Improbable Destinies: Fate, Chance, and the Future of Evolution, and is an author of one of the leading college biology textbooks. He has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
